Be green and you’ll have a profitable business. This is the main message of the Pre Ciab event about Green IT, realized by Febraban on April 13th. “There is no contradiction between these two ideas”, says Aerton Paiva, a lecturer of the event.
“Where will the motivation come from, so that they turn the sustainability speech into concrete actions?”, he asks. They probably wouldn’t come from the consumers. Although most part of the people have said that they approve the companies that respect the environment and also respect their employees, the same people buy products and services from the companies that don’t practice sustainability. A survey conducted by Instituto Ethos showed that 66% of the Brazilian consumers never avoided a product from a certain company because this company doesn’t have a responsible behavior.
The possibility of the changes coming from the companies is also scarce. Only 1,4% of Brazilian investors put their money in companies that compose the Índice de Sustentabilidade Ambiental da Bovespa (Environmental Sustainability Index – ISE). “Investors don’t take sustainability as opportunities”, says Paiva
Despite this situation, the message is clear: there is a general worry that a change is needed. So there is a necessity to go beyond the wall of wrong ideas about sustainability. Below are some examples of these ideas:
It’s only a passing fad;
Only the biggest companies do these actions;
These ideas are only for the highest employees in the company, like the directors and the president; When another president is elected, these ideas will disappear.
Paiva thinks that there is much ignorance about the environmental impacts of using IT. Some data: (1) to manufacture a LCD monitor it is necessary eight tons of different raw materials; (2) 15% of the greenhouse effect caused by the companies are created by the computing processes; (3) most data centers of the world consume more energy than some cities.
Data Center as energy consumers was the theme of the lecture of the IT architect of IBM david Anderson. He said that the number of the servers in the world will increase from 10 million in 1996 to 45 million in 2010. The energy consumption is increasing and also the energy costs.
According to Anderson, 45% of the energy consumption by a global corporation came from the IT centers. Sixty percent of this energy is used to cool equipment. One way to reduce this energy waste is the virtualization of data centers and the adoption of software in the SOA architecture. These measures can reduce costs in 50%.
